Police Believe Suspect In Subway Pipe Attack Behind Midtown Brick Attack, Others
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police believe the man they said attacked a subway rider with a pipe in Brooklyn also carried our several other attacks as part of an apparent two day rampage.
Leon Sims, 25, of Brooklyn, has been charged with two counts of felony assault in connection with the Sept. 22 attack at a C train stop.
Police said Sims struck a 35-year-old man in the head several times with the pipe, causing him to fall onto the tracks at the Ralph Avenue stop in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
The victim was taken to Interfaith Medical Center. He was last reported in stable condition, with cuts to his head and a chipped tooth.
The subway attack was the culmination of a series of incidents, police believe, carried out over two days. They began, police believe, with an attack on his grandmother on Sept. 20. Police think Sims struck the 87-year-old with her cane. His father reported him missing after the attack.
The next day, Sims is believed to have carried out two attacks, including one on a 27-year-old man on 55th Street in Midtown at 8 p.m. Later that night, also in Midtown, a man was struck over the head with a brick. Police believe Sims carried that attack out as well. The victim in that incident remains hospitalized in stable condition.
The next day police believe Sims attacked a 51-year-old man on Flatbush Avenue. Then police believe he carried out the subway attack.
Police spotted Sims while searching for the suspect in the Flatbush Avenue attack. When police approached him, they say Sims ran and was hit by a car.
Sims has been charged with three assaults. He remains hospitalized.
