Man Arrested After Human Remains Found At Bronx Trash Facility, Police Find Head In Freezer
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police have made an arrest in connection with the discovery of human remains at a Hunts Point garbage transfer station last week.
Somorie Moses, 40, of Brooklyn was taken into custody Saturday and has been charged in the case. Last week, body parts belonging to an unidentified female were discovered in the trash heaps at the Bronx facility.
Police sources tell CBS2 that detectives found additional body parts, including a human head, two hands and two feet, inside the freezer of his Eramus Street apartment in Flatbush. Authorities will run DNA tests to determine whose body parts they are.
Moses -- a registered sex offender -- has been charged with concealment of a human corpse.
Moses has an extensive rap sheet with over eight arrests. He served three years in prison for raping and forcing a girl under the age of 16 into prostitution in 2006.
Police used surveillance cameras and phone records to track him down.
Frank Vassel told CBS2's Brian Conybeare he was stunned to learn that his next door neighbor is accused if cutting up a woman's body.
"That's crazy. That's real gross," he said. "A monster, got to be a monster."
Winston Harris said he knew Moses, who also had a past conviction for weapons possession. He said the building is becoming more dangerous.
Others in the building were outraged to know he lived there.
"There are children living here as well," one neighbor said. "That makes it even more sick to deal with."
The woman's death remains under investigation by the Medical Examiner's Office. As 1010 WINS' Roger Stern reports, police are trying to determine how the victim and Moses are connected.
Moses will be arraigned in Bronx Criminal Court.
