Man Accused Of Fleeing Police, Crashing Stolen Car On Long Island
BELLPORT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Long Island arrested a man on Friday, after he allegedly fled officers in a stolen vehicle and crashed it in Bellport.
An officer from the Suffolk County police Third Precinct Community Support Unit tried to pull over the 1994 Buick on McKinney Street in Central Islip, after he allegedly saw the driver of the Buick throw drugs out of the car just before 6 p.m. Friday.
The driver did not stop and police began a chase, but the chase was called off due to traffic conditions, police said.
A Suffolk County police helicopter was launched, and followed the driver, who crashed into a guardrail on the Sunrise Highway at Exit 56, police said.
The driver – Shanden Terry, 21, of Central Islip – was arrested around 6:30 p.m., police said.
He was charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, criminal trespass, and criminal possession of marijuana, police said.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority police, who reported the vehicle Buick that Terry was allegedly driving stolen at the Ronkonkoma Long Island Rail Road station earlier Friday, were also set to charge Terry with additional counts, police said.
Terry was to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip later Saturday.
