Man Accused In Dozens Of Car Break-Ins Spanning Several LI Towns
NORTH BELLPORT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in Suffolk County say they've arrested a man who is responsible for dozens of car break-ins since July.
According to police, 36-year-old Keith Keene is responsible for numerous car break-ins that happened in Medford, North Bellport and East Patchogue.
Keene was arrested Sunday at around 1:40 p.m. in Bayport after police say a victim who recognized Keene from surveillance video of a break-in on Aug. 13 in Medford spotted him on Station Road.
The victim called for help and several residents helped detain Keene until police officers arrived and placed him under arrest on a parole warrant, authorities said.
Following further investigation, Fifth Squad detectives said they believed Keene was responsible for dozens of car break-ins in which he would ride around on his bicycle looking for unlocked vehicles.
Items that were stolen included cash, wallets, pocketbooks, jewelry, gift cards and electronics that were left in the vehicles.
Police said vehicles left at the following locations were targeted in July and August: Matsunaye Drive in Medford; Patrician Lane in Medford; Meyer Lane in Medford; Travis Road in East Patchogue; Orchard Road in North Bellport; Rustic Avenue in North Bellport; South Village Drive in North Bellport; Tarpon Avenue in North Bellport.
Detectives believe Keene may also be responsible for numerous additional larcenies.
Keene is charged with two counts of grand larceny and five counts of petit larceny. He is scheduled to appear in First District Court in Central Islip on Monday.
