Subways resume after debris sparks track fire under Grand Central Terminal
NEW YORK -- Debris caught fire overnight in a subway tunnel under Grand Central Terminal, causing delays for the morning commute.
The MTA says 4/6 train service has since been restored between 86th and Wall Street.
Riders should still expect delays and service changes through the area.
CBS New York's Elijah Westbrook reported dozens of MTA crew members and firefighters could be seen walking down the platform and into the southbound tunnel between 42nd and 33rd streets.
Smoke filled the tunnel and halted service overnight along the Lexington Avenue line.
Riders that Westbrook spoke with raised concerns about debris on the tracks.
"You look into the tracks, it's cluttered with filth and garbage. There's no reason for it, there's cans all over the place. Stuff like that is going to create a problem," one man said.
"Doesn't affect my ridership. It's in God's hands, so take it from there," said another.
No injuries were reported, and service was restored around 5:30 a.m.
