Maintenance To Snag Overnight Service On E, F, M, R Subway Lines
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Overnight train service between Queens and Manhattan on the E, F, M and R subway lines will be disrupted this week for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's FASTRACK repair program.
Work will take place on the four lines beginning at 10 p.m. Monday, and continuing through Friday morning between 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each day.
During the work period, the E Train will be unavailable in Manhattan and western Queens, with no service between the Roosevelt Avenue and World Trade Center stops. The F Train will be shut down in Queens between Roosevelt Avenue and 21st Street-Queensbridge.
M Train service will end early between Forest Hills-71st Avenue and Myrtle Avenue each night, and R Train service will end early between Forest Hills-71st Avenue and Whitehall Street.
As alternatives, riders may take the 7 Train to 74th Street-Roosevelt Avenue in Jackson Heights, Queens, or the N Train to Queensboro Plaza.
In Manhattan along Eighth Avenue, the A Train may be used as an alternative to the E Train, while along 53rd Street, the D or nearby No. 6 and N trains are options.
Free shuttle buses will also make all local stops between Queensboro Plaza and 74th Street-Roosevelt Avenue.
The Fastrack maintenance program shuts down train service over a section of a subway line, so workers can have uninterrupted access to all of the infrastructure and equipment inside.
Crews will inspect signals and switches, fix and replace track sand ties, work on elevators and escalators, repair water damage, clear drains, and clean stations, the MTA said.
The MTA has said the Fastrack system allows crews to work more efficiently, to the point where it saved $16.7 million in 2012.
