Magic Johnson Says Dodgers Won't Go After Robinson Cano
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The New York Yankees just received a gift from Magic Johnson.
The Dodgers owner gave a strong indication Thursday that Los Angeles wouldn't be gunning after Robinson Cano, who will reportedly be seeking around $300 million in free agency.
"Though I can't talk about it, that other guy in New York is going to get paid -- not by us," Johnson said, according to CBSSports.com. "But he's going to get paid."
The Dodgers are hoping to lock up ace Clayton Kershaw this offseason, which would mean big, big money. Johnson said when it comes to another huge signing, the numbers "probably just don't add up."
That's huge news for the Yankees fans expecting have Los Angeles in the mix for the second baseman.
Johnson shook his head no when asked if Cano would be a possibility for the free-spending Dodgers, according to CBSSports.com.
"You've got to pay Clayton," he said. "I can't say anything, but you can't have two guys. It's common sense for anybody who knows numbers."
Johnson made the comments as the Dodgers opened up their NLDS series against the Atlanta Braves. Kershaw, slated for free agency after the 2014 season, made his latest case for a payday in the 6-1 win, throwing seven innings of three-hit, one-run ball while striking out 12.
Cano hit .314 with 27 home runs and 107 RBIs for the Yankees this season. Managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner has said his goal is for New York's payroll to be under the $189 million tax threshold by 2014.
