Madison Square Park Playground Named After September 11th Hero
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A playground in Madison Square Park in Manhattan was renamed on Saturday to honor a fallen hero of the September 11th attacks.
Moira Ann Smith was one of 23 NYPD officers killed on September 11th. At the time, she was assigned to the area of the Flatiron District, where Madison Square Park is located.
In her honor, the playground was renamed "Police Officer Moira Ann Smith Playground." James Smith, Moira Ann's widower, Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, and Patricia Smith, the daughter of James and Moira were on hand to rename the playground in a touching ceremony.
"People who survived the World Trade Center attacks will tell you they remember Moira, a beacon of calm in the chaos, leading the injured to care," Kelly said. "Even from the distance of more than a decade, her actions are extraordinary, but her conduct should be no surprise."
Moira Ann evacuated hundreds of people out of Tower Two on that fateful day, continually returning to the building after exiting to save as many lives as possible.
