M.E. Rules Madoff Son's Apartment Death Suicide
NEW YORK (CBS 2/AP) – The hanging death of jailed financier Bernard Madoff's eldest son in New York City has formally been ruled a suicide.
The cause of death for 46-year-old Mark Madoff was released Sunday by the city's medical examiner's office.
Madoff was found hanged early Saturday morning inside his Soho loft while his 2-year-old son slept nearby.
Investigators said Madoff's father-in-law found him with a dog leash around his neck hanging from a pipe.
Mark Madoff had been the subject of further investigation, but he had not been charged with any crime.
It was the second anniversary of the day his father was arrested in the worst investment fraud in American history.
Sources said his father's scandal left his family, especially his eldest son, broken.
"It's been a terrible life and he had no apparent hope of his life getting any better," said Andrew Kirtzman, author of "Betrayal."
Mark Madoff's death came on the second anniversary of his father's arrest.
