Driver's Medical Issue May Have Caused Wild Lower Manhattan Crash
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A driver seemingly out of control, crashed in Lower Manhattan leaving six people hurt.
At least six people were hurt when a car ended up on a sidewalk after crashing into two other vehicles.
As CBS2's Jessica Layton reported, witnesses said it seemed like the driver just wouldn't stop.
"I'm still in shock right now," Hector Freytes said, "I look down and look up and see a car make a beeline for that side of the sidewalk, and people diving left and right."
Police said the TLC driver suffered a medical issue behind the wheel of a Lincoln Continental when he lost control and injured six people.
It all started around 1:20 p.m. Thursday when the Lincoln and a Ford Explorer collided at Broadway and Liberty Street near Zuccotti Park.
The SUV then struck a person on a bike.
"She was in a stretcher and immobilized in a neck brace," Bill Fuchs said.
Witnesses scattered from the scene as fast as they could when the car didn't stop and kept speeding, hitting three pedestrians.
The Lincoln kept going down Liberty Street before crashing into the back of a third vehicle and jumping a curb.
Pieces of the mangled car were still scattered on the sidewalk, Thursday night.
"It was a really hard impact, it just pulled the bicycle rack out of the concrete," Yuehru Chu said.
The victims were taken to nearby hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver accused of causing the injuries complained of chest pain while being questioned by police, and was loaded into an ambulance. He is not expected to be charged.
