Loved Ones Remember Teen Gunned Down In Crown Heights

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The family of a Brooklyn teen mourned his loss Tuesday night after he was shot and killed in Crown Heights earlier in the day.

Standing near a growing sidewalk memorial to his son, Fred Robinson displayed a father's pride talking about his son, Darius, and how they bonded over basketball.

"He started getting close to beating me at the end and once I got about 40 years old, he was taking me to the last dribble," Robinson told 1010 WINS' Al Jones.

Darius Robinson, 17, was standing in a crowd in front of 720 St. Marks Ave., at around 1:20 a.m., when bullets flew and cut the teen's dreams short.

The victim's father said he has felt numb and lost since his son was pronounced dead at Interfaith Medical Center.

"Darius is a focused go-getter. He had two jobs and he worked every day. You don't find too many 17-year-olds that go to school full-time and hold down two jobs," Robinson said.

Friends and family gathered Tuesday night and said their loved one would always be with them.

"We are here and we will remain here and you will be in all of our hearts forever," Robinson's aunt said.

Community activist Tony Herbert urged those with information to come forward.

"A lot of people walked up to this family and said 'That was my man.' So if that was your man, step up and do the right thing," he said.

Police don't believe Robinson was the intended target and the shooter is still on the loose.
