Looking For Bullpen Help, Yanks Acquire Ex-Mets Reliever Ryota Igarashi Off Waivers
NEW YORK (WFAN) - The Yankees, currently struggling with depth in their bullpen, have acquired ex-Mets reliever Ryota Igarashi off of waivers, according to CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman.
The 33-year-old right-hander will report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to begin his Yankees career.
The Japan native has been well-traveled since the Mets released him in 2011. He spent time pitching in the Dominican Winter League before signing a Minor League deal with the Pirates prior to this season. He didn't make the Major League squad out of Spring Training, and was subsequently traded from the Bucs to the Blue Jays, where he pitched to the tune of a 1.29 ERA in Triple-A before being called up to the big club on Friday.
After allowing four runs in two appearances this weekend, Igarashi was designated for assignment. To make room for him on the Yankees' 40-man roster, New York moved right-hander Brad Meyers to the 60-day disabled list.
In two seasons pitching in Flushing, Igarashi posted a forgettable 5.74 ERA in 79 appearances.
