Long Island Wedding Guest Charged For Trying To Steal Gifts
SAYVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – A wedding guest was arrested Saturday night for trying to steal gifts from the newly married couple.
Suffolk County police arrested 18-year-old Omar Santiago of Irvington, N.J. a short distance from West Sayville Country Club just before midnight Saturday.
He's been charged with grand larceny in the fourth degree.
Police said Santiago was among the guests at Larry and Joanna Williamson's wedding reception.
The maitre d' said he saw the man carrying the box of gift envelopes and alerted the bride, who did not recognize Santiago at first.
The suspect then tried to stuff the envelopes into this pockets and took off out of the country club. Other wedding guests chased him down and held him until police arrived.
All of the gift envelopes were returned to the couple.
