Long Island Teen, Rescue Crews Save 11-Year-Old From Drowning
HUNTINGTON STATION, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- A Long Island teen is being credited with saving the life of an 11-year-old boy, who nearly drowned in a backyard pool Monday afternoon.
Authorities said the boy was at a friend's swimming pool on Clinton Avenue in Huntington Station around 12:30 p.m. when he went underwater and didn't come back up. Jalen Sair, 16, of Huntington Station, was able to pull the boy out before he said his uncle and cousin administered CPR.
Sair spoke with 1010 WINS on Monday and said the whole incident was a "scary moment," but that the rescued boy is "doing good now."
Before the incident, Sair said that he and other friends asked the boy if he could swim and he told them "yes."
"He was playing around and he seemed like he was doing okay, so I just took my eyes off him for a little while. When I came back, we checked the deep end and my friend was like 'he's laying down on the floor,'" he said.
When they arrived at the scene, members of the Huntington Fire Department and the Huntington Community First Aid Squad administered first aid on the boy. Though he was breathing, he remained unresponsive. He was transported to Huntington Hospital and was to be transferred to Schneider Children's Hospital for observation.
"I don't know if he knows I saved his life, but to me it doesn't matter -- it's just that he's safe," Sair said.
