Long Island Street Dedicated To The Memory Of Slain NYPD Officer Peter Figoski
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A powerful and poignant dedication to a New York city hero was made on Saturday, one that will ensure that his memory will never fade.
Figoski's four daughters, his parents, relatives, neighbors, and a significant number of law enforcement personnel were on hand as the West Babylon street that the slain cop lived on was renamed Officer Peter Figoski Way, CBS 2's Steve Langford reported.
"Today in what would have been his 49th birthday, we add one more assurance that Detective Figoski's legacy will not be forgotten," Police Commissioner Kelly told the crowd.
The dedication came nearly two years after Figoski was shot to death while responding to a drug bust gone bad in Brooklyn, that amount of time not nearly enough to ease the shock and pain of his murder.
"Today we are making a loud declaration that we will not forget our heroes," Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said.
Commissioner Kelly, who is rarely observed making any public expression of sentiment, reflected deeply on the haunting loss of the officer and father.
"It's really gut wrenching," Kelly said, "His four beautiful daughters are left to navigate the world on their own. I can tell you that for the New York City Police Department, we pride ourselves on never forgetting."
The stirring tributes to the slain officer were a reminder to his family of the price paid to know that their father was a hero. The sign honoring Figoski was placed on the same spot that his daughters would wait for the school bus when they were growing up.
