Long Island Mosque Expansions On Hold
SELDEN, NY (WCBS 880) - Brookhaven town officials say they need more time to review controversial plans to expand to expand two Islamic mosques.
LISTEN: WCBS 880 L.I. Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reports
So, they've delayed action on the proposals until at least next month.
Neighborhood opposition to the expansions has been vocal and that has some in the community questioning the motive.
"As far as I can see it, they seem decent," one man told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs. "I've never had any opposition or problems with them in the neighborhood. As far as I can see, everything is okay."
That neighbor believes the vote delay is due to anti-Muslim sentiment.
Opponents, however, say traffic congestion is the real reason they're against mosque expansion.
