Long Island Man Killed While Cutting Trees Damaged By Sandy

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Centereach, Long Island, man died Tuesday morning, cutting trees in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

As 1010 WINS' Holli Haerr reported, Eileen Lourikas told 1010 WINS her husband, Nicholas, was the type who was always willing to help people. On Tuesday morning, he was doing just that when he lost his life, she said.

"The world is going to miss Nick, because he was just a good soul, and there was not one person that knew him that didn't love him," she said.

Suffolk County police said Nicholas Lourikas, 66, was cutting storm-damaged trees with another person behind the Hauppauge Palace Diner, at 525 Route 347 in Hauppauge, when a tree hit him in the head.

He was taken to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
