WCBS 880's Sophia Hall talks to students
McCarthy's son was also critically injured in the LIRR massacre.
Upon hearing her story, the students said they understand the importance of saying something if they saw a friend with an illegal gun.
"I would probably ask them why and tell their parents," said one student.
WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall asked the student if that would be easy.
The student replied, "No, but I have to do it."
Another student says she already knows the pain of gunfire. Her grandfather was shot in the head while on duty as a police officer.
"Even people now, they say 'He was such a great man. I knew him, and, you know, I can't believe that happened.'"
