Police: Oyster Bay Man Streamed Himself Live Driving Drunk
OYSTER BAY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Sunday said an Oyster Bay, Long Island man drove drunk in the early morning hours – and streamed himself live over the Internet doing so.
Around 1 a.m., New York State Police began receiving multiple calls about someone driving erratically on westbound Ocean Parkway in Nassau County, state police said.
Witnesses said the man was using the live video streaming app Periscope to broadcast himself driving a Lexus drunk, police said.
State police logged on, identified and viewed the stream belonging to the man – identified as Ahmed A. Almalki, 33, of Oyster Bay, police said.
Troopers used the live feed to track down Almalki as he continued to drive on Ocean Parkway, and stopped him safely on the Wantagh Parkway near the Hempstead Turnpike, police said.
Almalki failed sobriety tests and was arrested for felony driving while intoxicated – as he had a previous DWI conviction in the last 10 years. He was also ticketed on citations of not using signal lamps, moving from the lane unsafely, and failure to drive at a reasonable and prudent speed, police said.
