Long Island Carnival Worker Killed After Being Hit By Ride
BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - A carnival worker in Brentwood was killed Saturday night after he was struck by one of the rides.
The accident happened at the crowded Feast of Mother Cabrini Festival.
22-year-old Michael Austin was reaching under the ride possibly to change the music playing on an iPod.
Suffolk County police said when he stood up, the ride struck his head and knocked him to the ground.
He was rushed by helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he died.
A carnival spokesperson said Austin was conscious and was set to undergo a brain scan at the hospital, but died a few hours after the accident.
He was working on a ride called Scat. There were 16 people on the ride at the time but no one besides Austin was injured.
The ride will stay closed pending an investigation. The festival will continue as planned until Monday.
