Long Island Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg Set To Retire
ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Longtime New York State Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg (D-Long Beach) announced Monday that he will not run for reelection this fall.
Weisenberg, a former police officer, teacher and lifeguard first elected to the Assembly in 1989, said he retire at the end of this year.
Weisnberg, 80, has been known in particular for his advocacy for those with disabilities. He has authored hundreds of bills that were enacted.
They include recent laws to prohibit indoor tanning by New Yorkers age 16 and under and to outlaw texting while driving as a primary traffic offense.
Earlier this year, he also led the push for cost-of-living raises for about 100,000 workers at nonprofits funded by six state agencies that serve developmentally disabled, mentally ill, addicted, elderly and juvenile clients.
