Long Beach Residents Honor Those Who Helped At Sandy Anniversary Ceremony
LONG BEACH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Superstorm Sandy anniversary was held Saturday to thank the first responders, and to pray for those who remained out of their homes on Long Beach offshore from Long Island.
As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, hundreds of people gathered and thanked those who went above and beyond to help people they had never met.
Diane Rossi became emotional at the ceremony as she talked about the first-responders and volunteers who helped her and her parents after Sandy hit on Oct. 29 of last year.

"I just have to be here to say thank you to everybody, because it was horrible. It was really horrible," Rossi said, "and I just need to say thank you."
Expressions of gratitude were everywhere at the ceremony.
"My son just got into his house. His house was knocked down – that's one year," said Beatrice Adelson. "He was very lucky that he had very good friends that took them in. He stayed with them for a year."
tThe entire boardwalk in Long Beach was destroyed in the storm, along with many homes.
A new and rebuilt boardwalk was officially completed on Friday.
