Long Beach Island Struggles 4 Months After Sandy
HOLGATE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Four months after Superstorm Sandy destroyed homes in Holgate, and sent up to 6 or 7 feet of water into homes and businesses in Beach Haven, it remains a long road back.
"You know when you start pulling all the storm debris out of homes, it's a little bit shocking seeing people's lives laying out on the street," said Beach Haven Mayor Bob Keeler.
Keeler is one of several residents who have to travel north several miles to Ship Bottom to find a working ATM or a grocery store, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.

"Some of the ma and pa shops are opening up, and they're carrying more products that the convenience stores used to carry. They're starting to sell more things than they sold in the average year, just to take care of the residents down here."
Everyday conveniences are still hard to find, but residents insist they are making progress.
During Sandy, Long Beach Island was ravaged. Boats were thrown along the side of the road, and houses were left in ruins.
It was more than a week before residents were even allowed to return to survey the damage.
