LONG BEACH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The remnants of the nearly 100-year-old Sandy-ravaged Long Beach boardwalk will be demolished, starting this weekend.
This Saturday, officials will begin ripping out what many residents of the Long Island city consider to be the heart and soul of their community.

"It's a little heartbreaking," said resident Derek O'Brien. "It's going to be hard for some people to see it go, but there will be more good memories when the new one comes."
The demolition is expected to take about a month.
Long Beach officials expect to have a new and stronger 2.2 mile boardwalk by summer. It is expected to cost $25 million.
