Local Soccer Player Becomes Internet Celeb Thanks To One Crazy 'Shot'
HACKENSACK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A local high school soccer player has become an Internet sensation.
His unconventional goal now has more than 120,000 views, and, as CBS 2's Steve Overmyer found out Wednesday, the forward flip is becoming part of his routine.
Randy Gordon is a typical Hackensack High School junior, but one who has been catapulted into the spotlight because of a catapult-like throw in that resulted in a goal.
"We use it as a cross to my teammates in the middle, but when it went in it was crazy," Gordon said.
The video went viral because it shows the first time on record a throw-in like this directly resulted in a goal, Overmyer reported.
"I don't know anyone else in New Jersey that does this. Yeah, I could probably injure myself doing this. That's why I'm usually really careful," Gordon said.
The unique throw-in is not only a crowd pleaser; it also gives a strategic advantage to his team.
"Randy gets about 20-30 feet more than he usually gets with a regular throw," coach Dave Wells said, adding when asked if it's really nothing more than just a fun gymnastics move, "It started that way, but when we first saw it, it was unbelievable so we used it on our attack."
It turns out Gordon is so good at the throw, it his new method of distance throwing.
"It's pretty neat because anytime I need something and he's far away I can have it in a heartbeat," Wells said.
And Gordon's friends don't hesitate to ask him to demonstrate the move off the field.
"I usually throw things to people like water and chips. They usually encourage me to throw it and if I don't they bust on me," Gordon said.
