Local Leaders Establish Scholarship Fund For Crown Heights Hit-And-Run Victim's Son
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 38-year-old single mother is being remembered by elected officials and local community and religious leaders as they launch a scholarship fund for her 8-year-old son.
State Sen. Eric Adams announced Friday the group is donating $25,000 to set up a college scholarship fund for Donna Fountain's son.
Fountain was heading home after working overnight to spend Christmas with her son when she was run down at the intersection of Eastern Parkway and Troy Avenue.
Police found a handwritten list entitled "My Dreams" next to her body.
Fountain wanted to own her own home, establish a sanctuary for gay and lesbian teenagers and see her son graduate from college.
Adams said they hope to honor Fountain's last wishes and get her child the money he needs to afford a quality education.
"We can't do anything about the nightmare of her loss but we can assist her in continuing that dream," Adams said.
Police said Fountain, a home health care aide, was struck by a gray car which sped away leaving the woman dying on the pavement just two blocks from her home.
Police are reviewing traffic camera footage and vow to track down the driver.
A reward is being offered for information leading to the hit-and-run.
