LISTEN: LIPA Executive Questioned On Restoration Effort

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Thousands of Long Island Power Authority customers remain without power, two weeks after superstorm Sandy socked the region.

According to LIPA Chief Operating Officer Michael Hervey, some 56,000 customers remained without power as of 4 p.m. Monday afternoon, but Hervey said 46,000 of those cannot be restored just yet.

When pressed about why LIPA has been slower in getting power restored compared with other utilities in the Tri-State Area, Hervey told WCBS 880 that the service area actually received three storms which complicated the restoration effort.

Hervey also told WCBS 880 it remains unclear if LIPA customers will see rates increase due to the storm.

Residents held rallies all weekend despite the news that LIPA lifted its controversial rules to speed up restoration.
