LIRR Service Set To Return To Normal After Derailment
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Long Island Rail Road expects to resume regular service Monday, a week after a non-passenger train derailed at Rego Park, Queens, and destroyed nearly a mile of track.
Crews have been working constantly since the derailment on Monday of last week. They had to replace more than 1,540 damaged concrete ties, and some 3,700 feet of electrified third rail, the LIRR said.
The repair work was a massive and dangerous operation as trains rush by on three other tracks that surround the work site.
As of Sunday, the cause of the derailment remained under investigation by safety experts.
Last week, dozens of morning and evening rush hour trains were canceled or diverted due to the derailment. Frustrated commuters said they deserved a refund.
