LIRR: Copper Theft To Blame For Morning Delays, Cancellations

WOODSIDE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Long Island Rail Road commuters faced delays and cancellations Friday morning after officials said someone stripped copper wire from equipment that affected signals in Queens.

Officials said nearly 144 feet of copper wire was taken from a rail connection between the Woodside and Sunnyside stations.

Spokesman Aaron Donovan said the copper theft caused nearly 10 cancellations during the morning rush. It also delayed more than 40 trains.

"Copper theft is a problem but this is the first time that we have experienced copper theft recently in which it has had an impact on service in such a widespread nature," he told 1010 WINS.

The vandalism was discovered at 5:30 a.m. and service was restored by about 10:30 a.m.

Donovan said there will be some residual delays throughout the day as repairs are made. Service is expected to be back to normal for the evening commute.
