Service Restored With Delays On 3 LIRR Branches After Person Hit By Train Near Mineola Station
MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Long Island Rail Road trains are back on track with residual delays after service on three branches was snarled Thursday morning because of a person who was hit by a train near the Mineola station.
Normal service on the Ronkonkoma, Port Jefferson and Oyster Bay branches was restored around 11 a.m. Thursday, but the agency said riders should continue to expect residual delays of up to 60 minutes on the Ronkonkoma and Port Jefferson lines.
Earlier Thursday morning, delays were averaging up to two hours after service on the three branches was suspended in both directions.
The lines were suspended after a person who was not authorized to be on the tracks was struck and killed by a train, the agency said. In addition, the LIRR said trains were running at a reduced speed as a result of a broken crossing gate near Westbury.
New York City Transit was cross-honoring LIRR fares for a time Thursday morning, but cross-honoring is no longer in effect.
