The Summer Season makes us more cheerful than ever and some of the American athletes and personalities who are basking in the sun include:
Mets' leftfielder Mike Baxter, who grew up in Queens, whose catch saved Johan Santana's no-hitter. Congratulations to the Mets and Venezuelan pitcher Johan Santana, who tossed the first no-hitter in New York Mets history - quite a triumph for the Mets' ace, who missed last season because of shoulder surgery.
19-year-old Sloane Stephens, who reached the fourth round at the French Open by defeating Mathilde Johansson of France, 6-3, 6-2. Stephens is the only one of the eight teenagers who were in the Main Draw at Roland Garros, to reach the third round.
Free agent Myron Rolle, who spent a year at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar and says he's serious about being a role model for 'student-athletes,' is quickly making friends with several Pittsburgh Steelers players, as he competes for a roster spot with the Steelers.
Tiger Woods' niece, 21-year-old Cheyenne Woods, turned pro and will compete in her first LPGA tournament next week at the Wegman's LPGA Championship. She qualified to play in the U.S. Women's Open next month which will be played at Blackwolf Run in Kohler, Wisconsin. Cheyenne graduated from Wake Forrest and won the Atlantic Coast Conference individual title in 2011.
Pat Williams, Sr. VP and Co-Founder of the Orlando Magic, says he feels terrific and is as active as he was before being diagnosed with multiple myeloma over a year ago, with the exception of running Marathons. Williams underwent a stem cell transplant this past February and has resumed his busier- than- ever pace, promoting his 75th book: 'Leadership Excellence: The Seven Sides of Leadership for the 21st Century.' The Ann Liguori Foundation Charity Golf Classic on Wed., June 6 at the Maidstone Club in East Hampton, has been sold out for months. The charity golf tournament benefits the American Cancer Society and 'Healthy Children, Healthy Futures,' teaching young people about good nutrition and the importance of exercising regularly.
