Lightning Strike Knocks Out Police Dispatching System In Fairview, N.J.
FAIRVIEW, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - A lightning strike was causing problems for a police department in North Jersey on Thursday.
As WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported, one of the antennas on the roof of Fairview Borough Hall has been split into three stems from the lightning strike.
"It was a very loud clap of thunder," Borough Administrator Diane Testa told Putney. "And then the computers, everything shut down for a second. Everything got dark."

The power surge knocked out computer systems and the phones. The police station, which is also in the building, was also impacted by the outages.
"Police have taken action to get Bergen County in to do the dispatching for us," Mayor Vincent Bellucci told Putney.

"We're able to communicate with the cars through the county," Fairview Police Chief Frank Del Vecchio said.
He said the lightning bolt seemed to shoot right through the antenna.
"At this point, looks like it's completely dysfunctional," Del Vecchio said. "The captain and the police department indicated that sparks came out of the outlets."
