LI Businessman Expresses Interest In Mets
NEW YORK (CBS 2) – A Long Island businessman who made his fortune marketing vodka wants to help the Mets.
Martin Silver, who owners the Georgi vodka brand, said he wants to meet with Mets owners Fred and Jeff Wilpon to discuss buying a piece of their struggling franchise.
"We feel we could help them with the marketing, get the fan base back, we want the New York fans to believe again," Silver said. "We don't want the Yankees to get all the publicity with all the millions and millions of dollars they're spending."
The offer comes after the Wilpon family announced it's looking to sell a minority share of the team and after reports that the Wilpons have major financial issues, including a lawsuit that accuses them of knowing about Bernie Madoff's Ponzi Scheme.
The Wilpons lost millions of dollars investing with Madoff and a trustee representing some of the Madoff victims is suing the Mets owners to recover money.
