The former International Monetary Fund chief's legal team met with prosecutors on Wednesday to try to hammer out a deal, but talks still appear to be at a stalemate.
Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr. is said to be insisting that Strauss-Kahn plead guilty to a misdemeanor.
If a deal can't be reached, both sides are scheduled to return to court July 18.
Meanwhile, a longtime former district attorney is praising how Vance has handled the sexual assault case against Strauss-Kahn.
Robert Morgenthau issued a statement Thursday saying Vance has upheld the office's commitment "to seek justice over everything else.''
Morgenthau says he met this week with Vance, who took office in 2010. Morgenthau retired after 35 years in the job and endorsed Vance.
Last week, prosecutors said their case against Strauss-Kahn had weakened because of credibility issues of the alleged victim.
