Lawmakers Call For Better Consumer Protection Against Gas Price Gouging
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Two New York State lawmakers on Sunday calling for more protection for consumers against price gouging at the gas pump.
State Assemblyman David Weprin (D-Queens) and Sen. Eric Adams (D-Brooklyn) said customers remain at risk for price gouging as the gas shortage after Superstorm Sandy continues.
"We will not allow victims of this terrible storm to be taken advantage of at the gas pump," Weprin said in a news release. "We will do whatever we can to stop unscrupulous individuals from raising their gas prices and knowingly over-charging consumers for gasoline, as the region rebuilds after this terrible storm. We again demand protection for consumers against price gouging at the pump."
Adams urged anyone who suspects gouging at the pump to contact the New York State Consumer Protection Board immediately.
"The people of New York have experienced tremendous hardships with the lack of gasoline, damaged property, and even the loss of loved ones. New Yorkers have the right to say 'no' and not be taken advantage of by the greed of retailers," he said in the release.
Earlier this year, Weprin and Adams introduced two bills A6173 and S3631, requiring all gas stations statewide to post signs near each gas pump listing contact information for the New York Consumer Protection Board.
And just last week, New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced enforcement proceedings against 13 gas stations in the state that have been accused of price gouging.
Schneiderman said anyone suspecting price gouging at a gas station in New York state should call his office at (800) 771-7755 or make a complaint via the Web.
The gas stations involved in the probe include those on Long Island, in Westchester County, Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx.
