Last-Minute Holiday Shoppers Head To Herald Square Well Before Dawn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Holiday shoppers were up before sunrise Saturday, taking advantage of sales – and peace and quiet – in Herald Square.

As WCBS 880's Monica Miller reported, stores in Herald Square were open in during hours when the average person would be fast asleep, helping New York live up to its reputation as the city that never sleeps.

"We were here roaming around at 4 o'clock in the morning," said Samantha. She came with her boyfriend, who was in charge of carrying the large packages.

Samantha said their shopping was done after hitting Macy's and Toys-R-Us.

"They have a lot of 40 percent off, 50 percent off," she said. "I think it's decent."

They didn't even have to rely on public transit.

"It's no gridlock right now," she said. "We drove to the city."

But there wasn't as much activity as in previous years. Samantha said maybe Superstorm Sandy, and the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., have put a damper on the holiday spirit.

"But there are people here, surprisingly, but it wasn't as much as we thought, as last year," she said.

Samantha said last-minute shopping with no hassles and good prices is hard to beat.
