Officials: Plane Flying Over Long Island Hit By Laser Pointer Beam

MATTITUCK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The cockpit of a plane flying from Newark Airport to Rhode Island was hit by a laser pointer as it was flying over the East End of Long Island on Monday night.

According to the FAA, the crew of  United Airlines ExpressJet Flight 4404 reported sightings of a green laser light as it was flying in the vicinity of East Hampton Airport and Mattituck at around 10:40 p.m. The plane was 11,000 feet in the air at the time, and was headed toward T.F. Green Airport in Providence.

Officials from the Riverside and Southold police departments did a sweep of the area where the beam is believed to have originated, but found no concrete leads, police said.

The New York State Police and the FAA Rhode Island Office are still investigating the incident, officials said.
