Largest Class In School History Graduates From Rutgers
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Rutgers University graduated the largest class in school history Sunday.
The class of 2013 includes an estimated 14,302 graduates from the Rutgers campuses at New Brunswick-Piscataway, Newark, and Camden.
But only a few thousand of them were expected to attend a Sunday afternoon system-wide ceremony at High Point Solutions Stadium in Piscataway. Most Rutgers students will attend smaller graduation ceremonies with their schools and colleges this week, where they will pick up their degrees.
University President Robert Barchi presided over his first commencement and confer all undergraduate and graduate degrees.
The graduation ceremony came at the end of a difficult year from the school.
Mike Rice, the former men's basketball coach, made less-than-flattering headlines when he was fired in April, after a video of him pushing, kicking and throwing balls at players became public.
Athletic director Tim Pernetti resigned afterward, part of the fallout from the Mike Rice scandal.
