Police said the suspect, who is now in custody, got into a family argument in South L.A., during which he shot his grandmother as many as seven times. Another woman also was shot.
He then allegedly led police on a chase in a stolen car and fired at officers.
Police said the suspect crashed outside the grocery store in Silver Lake, where he exchanged gunfire with officers and was shot in the left arm.
He then allegedly ran into the store and took people hostage. Among them were employees, customers and even children.
There were approximately 40 to 50 people inside the store at the time. Some of them were released by the suspect, while others were rescued by first responders.
Police said one female bystander was shot and killed. Her name has not yet been released.
Authorities said the man ultimately asked for a set of handcuffs, put them on himself and turned himself in. He is now being treated for his wounds.
Earlier, President Donald Trump said he was monitoring the situation "very closely."
"Watching Los Angeles possible hostage situation very closely. Active barricaded suspect. L.A.P.D. working with Federal Law Enforcement," he tweeted.
