L.I. Teens Charged In Alleged Road Rage Hammer Attack
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Two Mineola teens were charged this weekend in an alleged rage assault on Long Island.
Nicolas Russi, 19, and Santiago Orrego, 18, were both charged with assault in connection with the incident, which happened around 11:30 p.m. Friday in Massapequa.
Nassau County police detectives said Rossi and Orrego got out of a 1999 Audi at a traffic light at Louden Street and Sunrise Highway in Massapequa, so they could confront two men – ages 20 and 28 – who had gotten out of a 2005 Cadillac.
The occupants of the two cars had had a verbal dispute while driving earlier, police said.
Orrego allegedly hit the 28-year-old man in the right side of his head with a hammer, causing a large laceration, police said.
Orrego also allegedly hit the 20-year-old victim twice in the back of the head – likewise causing a laceration – after the man tried to tackle him, police said.
Orrego and Russi then drove off, police said. The other two men were treated at a nearby hospital.
A short time later, Orrego and Russi turned themselves in at the Nassau County police Third Precinct station, police said.
They were arraigned in Nassau County First District Court in Hempstead on Saturday.
