L.I. Police: 200-Pound Pet Bird Rescued From Canal
COPIAGUE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Police say a big bird - possibly an emu - has been rescued from a Long Island canal.
Suffolk County police used ropes Monday to pull the bird out of the water in Copiague.
The bird was spotted running northbound on East Riviera Drive just before 11 a.m. Monday morning, Suffolk Police confirmed to WCBS 880.
The 200-pound bird then ran into the canal, according to police.
The soggy creature was eventually returned to its owner in Lindenhurst.
Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross says it is legal to own an emu, though town regulations might vary.
