L.I. Officials Urge Preparedness For Upcoming Hurricane Season
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The Nassau and Suffolk county executives and officials from the Red Cross are urging preparedness for the upcoming hurricane season which begins Saturday.
This year's hurricane season is expected to be worse than average, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center forecasting an active or extremely active season this year.
A new survey shows that even in the wake of Sandy and Irene most coastal residents maintain a false sense of security and aren't taking proper action to prepare for hurricanes, said John Miller, CEO of the American Red Cross on Long Island.

"The survey found that 56 percent of New York and New Jersey coastal respondents were very or somewhat concerned they could be in harm's way this year," Miller said. "However, less than half, only 49 percent of those living in New York and New Jersey, said the experience made them prepare in a bigger way this year."
Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone joined Miller to urge residents to put together hurricane kits and plans.

"The number one objective in these storms is the protection of life," Bellone said.
Mangano and Bellone said lessons learned in recent storms have made the counties more prepared for the hurricane season.
