L.I. Odd-Even Gas Rationing Policy To End Early Saturday Morning
HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Good news!
Long Island drivers soon won't need to worry about what number their license plate ends in to fill up the tank.
That's because Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano announced Thursday that the gas rationing plan put in place after Superstorm Sandy will come to an end at 12:01 a.m. Saturday.
The fuel management program was instituted on Nov. 9 in an effort to ease long lines associated with the gas crunch that occurred in the days after the storm.
The plan had set rules that drivers with license plates ending in an even number would be able to purchase fuel only on even-numbered days and drivers with license plate numbers that end in an odd number would be able to purchase fuel only on odd-numbered days.
Commercial vehicles, taxi or limousine fleets, emergency fleets and hand-held gas canisters had been exempt from the plan.
A similar gas rationing plan was instituted and continues to be enforced in the five boroughs of New York City.
The gas rationing plan in New Jersey was ended on Tuesday.
