L.I. Men Face Arraignment For Multiple Charges
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Two men face arraignment on Saturday after being arrested for assault and leaving the scene of an accident on Friday on Long Island.
Police arrested 27-year-old Everett Caban and 26-year-old Lavarr Cannon after a short police chase in Westbury.
Detectives said officers were conducting a seat belt check on the entrance ramp of the Northern State Parkway when they observed the passengers of a 2002 Toyota Camry not wearing a seatbelt. When the officers told the driver to pull over, Cannon took off.
Officers later found the car on Old County Road at Bond Street where it was on fire after the car had struck a PT Cruiser driven by a 58-year-old man.
The defendants fled the scene, but officers located the defendant and the passenger, Caban.
The man in the PT Cruiser suffered multiple pelvic fractures and a collapsed lung. Emergency officials transported to the man to a local hospital.
The suspects, meanwhile, face arraignment on Saturday in Hempstead for multiple charges. Cannon faces the following charges: assault in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injury, unlawful fleeing of a police office in the second degree, reckless endangerment in the second degree and tinted side windows. Caban faces the following charges: criminal sale of marijuana in the third degree, unlawful possession of marijuana and front passenger without a seatbelt.
