L.I. Lawmaker Announces Proposals To Adjust Common Core Testing
BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - New legislation has been proposed to help meet the concerns of frustrated parents and educators over New York State's controversial Common Core testing standards.
As WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported, State Senate Education Committee Chairman John Flanagan (R-East Northport) said there needs to be legitimate debate about the quantity and quality of exams.

He has outlined a host of proposals aimed at easing concerns over Common Core and standardized tests and Flanagan said he'll push for fast action.
"I intend to aggressively advance these pieces of legislation immediately. The public is expecting that action will be taken now," said Flanagan. "I think the public needs to know we are listening. I would like to, respectfully, think that we get it and we're also asking other people who bear responsibility to act as well."
Some of the legislation proposed would ban standardized testing on students in pre-kindergarten through second grade and speed up plans to eliminate what have been deemed unnecessary student assessments.
