L.I. Ferry Terminals Under Heightened Alert Following Boston Blasts
PORT JEFFERSON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Long Island's ferry service terminals are among the transportation centers where security has been tightened following the fatal Boston Marathon explosions.
As WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported, police officers approached him minutes after he took a photo of the Port Jefferson ferry terminal.
"We don't discuss what we actually do but there are many things in place, some of which would be obvious. For example, we do have bomb-sniffing dogs on the properties. And some would not be obvious," Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry Steamboat Company General Manager Fred Hall told Xirinachs.
The huge ferries carry hundreds of people and dozens of vehicles to and from Bridgeport, Conn.

Hall said the Boston blasts were an important reminder.
"It became a teachable moment yesterday to redouble our efforts," said Hall. "Certainly, this was a reminder that we need to be ever vigilant and we do, of course, always have certain security measures in place."
The enhanced security at the ferry terminals was first put into place following the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
"Certainly, that was when we instituted some much stricter procedures and we continue with that today," said Hall.
