L.I. Construction Company Missing 6,000 Pound Hammer
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Long Island construction company is on the lookout for its 6,000 pound hammer.
Bove Industries' Eric Sorenson says the vibratory sheeting hammer, which is a sort of high-tech pile driver, was taken over the weekend from a job site on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa Park.
Bove is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the hammer's return. Sorenson says a new one costs about $100,000.
Sorenson says whoever took the hammer had to have taken it away with a flatbed truck. "They had to really work at it to get it," Sorenson said.
He thinks the culprit is either someone involved in construction or someone who might have wanted to sell the hammer as scrap metal.
Messages asking for the public's help in tracking down the piece of equipment were posted on Sunrise Highway's electronic traffic signs -- the same ones used to alert drivers to traffic problems and AMBER alerts.
Bove is working on a storm drainage improvement project in Massapequa Park for the state -- that's how they got approval to post the messages.
