L.I. Bridge Renamed For Fallen NYPD Officer Peter Figoski
WEST BABYLON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A bridge on Long Island has been renamed in honor of a fallen New York City police officer.
The bridge on State Route 109 in West Babylon was renamed the "New York City Police Department Detective Peter Figoski Memorial Bridge" during a ceremony over the weekend.
Figoski was a 22-year veteran of the NYPD and a resident of West Babylon. He was fatally shot while responding to a robbery in Brooklyn back in 2011.
"Officer Figoski gave his life protecting our city and renaming this bridge is an important and deserved tribute," stated State Sen. Phil Boyle. "For many years to come, every time people pass by this bridge they will be reminded of Peter's bravery and sacrifice."
Figoski was posthumously promoted to Detective by the NYPD and was awarded the department's Medal of Honor.
The gunman who killed Figoski, Lamont Pride, was sentenced to 45 years to life in prison in February.
Two other men convicted in connection with Figoski's death were sentenced to long prison terms in June.
Pride's alleged getaway driver, Michael Velez, was found not guilty of first- and second-degree burglary and a fifth suspect, Ariel Tejada, testified against the others as part of a plea deal that gave him a lesser sentence.
