Knicks Reportedly On Verge Of Finalizing Woodson Deal
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Memorial Day weekend is right around the corner, and it seems it'll be a stress-free affair for Mike Woodson.
The Knicks head coach is expected to have the interim tag officially lifted from his title "no later than Thursday," according to Frank Isola of the New York Daily News.
Woodson was the "one and only candidate," Isola reported.
Though New York finished out their 12th straight season without a playoff series victory this month, the team showed a marked improvement under Woodson. The coach leaned heavily on Carmelo Anthony, leading the Knicks to an 18-6 regular season record after the abrupt resignation of Mike D'Antoni in mid-March.
Woodson, popular among the Knicks' stars, is "expected to receive a three- or four-year contract," according to Isola. That would tie him to the core of Anthony, Tyson Chandler and Amar'e Stoudemire, who all have three years remaining on their deals.
An extension has been expected, and was bolstered recently by Anthony's endorsement and the promotion of Woodson's pal, general manager Glen Grunwald.
But at times it seemed like no slam dunk. The Knicks were rumored to have interest in Kentucky's John Calipari and legendary NBA coach Phil Jackson.
Calipari, fresh off his first NCAA title, repeatedly expressed a lack of interest in coaching anywhere but the Commonwealth. New York never even reached out to Jackson, Isola reported.
