Kelly: NYPD Cops Are 'Phenomenal,' Not Lazy
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Last week, Democratic mayoral hopeful Bill de Blasio agreed with actor Alec Baldwin that the NYPD's stop-and-frisk policy is "lazy." On Monday, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly used the criticism as an opportunity to tout the police force coming off a week that saw no homicides in the city.
The murder-free streak "is emblematic of how safe this city has become and what a great job the New York City police officers are doing," Kelly told reporters, including WCBS 880's Rich Lamb. "Although some people think they may be lazy, I think they're doing a phenomenal job."
Kelly said having a week without any murders is "certainly unsual in a city of 8.4 million people." He noted that in 1990, the city had 2,245 murders -- an average of more than six killings a day.

"I think it's indicative of the great work of the men and women in the police department," Kelly said.
De Blasio appeared on the new MSNBC talk show "Up Late With Alec Baldwin" on Friday night, when the former "30 Rock" star said stop-and-frisk seemed lazy to him. De Blasio responded by saying "I really appreciate that analysis" and "I would argue ... you're right."
Republican candidate Joe Lhota was quick to attack de Blasio's remarks, saying a day later: "Bill characterizing the NYPD as lazy is infuriating. On what planet is he living?"
